Lao Trekking Guide Experienced Northern Phongsaly

My name is Kham

Since my teenage years, I have been trekking around Laos as a tour guide for over 7 years. Born in an ethnic minority village, I speak several languages. Additionally, I attended college, so I am fluent in English as well. I live with my wife and kids close to Oudomxay but have worked for years in Phongsaly and Muang Khua too, giving me extensive knowledge of northern Laos. Take a look at the tours on offer on this page, but feel free to call me or send a message to discuss your travel details and wishes!

Trekking in Muang Khua

This district is located in the southern part of the Phongsaly province. The residents here belong to various ethnic groups such as Akha, Khmu, and Thaidam. We offer treks ranging from 2 to 6 days (1 to 5 nights). All treks in this district are moderate and offer a balanced combination of nature and village experiences.

Trekking in Muang Xay

Muang Xay is nestled in the heart of Laos and easily accessible from all major towns. Just outside the town, a beautiful and unexplored part of Laos awaits you. Our journey together can span from 2 to 8 days, depending on your preference. Please note that the treks vary in difficulty, so be sure to explore the available options.

Trekking in Buontai/Phongsaly

Phongsaly is tucked away in the northeast of Laos and is the most remote but most beautiful province in the country. It has lakes, forests, and mountain rice and cardamom fields. The trips offered here are for the more adventurous, but they are definitely very rewarding as some parts remain relatively untouched.

We also arrange road trips (with a driver) for those who do not fancy a multi-day trek. These range between 3 and 5 days and start in Muang Xay as it is easy to reach. This tour can also be organized as a one-way trip to Phongsali from where you could continue to Vietnam.

Practical Information

  • What is included?

In addition to the breathtaking views, stays in villages with local residents, and exciting hikes, the following is included: meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), drinking water, homestays with local families, an English-speaking guide, transport as outlined in the trekking itinerary, taxi fares, and village fees.

  • What to bring?

If you require soft drinks, snacks, or sweets, please bring them along. During the trek, obtaining these items can be challenging and may incur additional expenses. Please be aware that in some instances, sanitary facilities may be limited. Feel free to consult your guide for more information specific to your trek.

  • Support the locals!

Some of the villages we will visit and stay in may be economically challenged. They would deeply appreciate a gift. This could include pens, pencils, and paper for the students. Another excellent option is sports equipment for the children or soap and vegetable seeds. In certain villages, locals sell indigo products, which also greatly supports them.

  • Customs & hygiene

Some of the villages we will visit are located in remote areas. The residents in these areas typically do not have toilets and take showers in open public spaces. The customs of some of the tribes we visit are different than in the city. Always heed the recommendations of your guide, as customs can vary among different ethnic groups.
